Sele Farm Community Centre - Past, Present & Future

Our History

The original Community Centre was situated on the sight of the houses & Bungalows in what is now called Perrett Gardens. To enable the building of the community centre, there was a committee formed called The Sele Farm Community Association. This was made up of residents from the estate, who did many years of fundraising. That money along with the sale of the land in Hawthorne Close and with a loan from the Borough Council enabled the build of the original Sele Farm Community Centre. It was opened in 1973. The Hall was always very popular for celebrating milestone Birthdays, engagements, christening parties and in the days before wedding packages in hotels, most couples had their wedding reception here. This building lasted for over thirty years before its demolition and relocation.

The new modern Sele Farm Community Centre was built in a slightly new location to the right of the original building. This building was designed and project managed by Ken and Pamela Grethe MBE along with Henry Sargent MBE. It was opened in 2007 and now offers a modern, bright and flexible brick built building. Today, the building and site is managed on a daily basis by a Management Committee of residents who live on the estate and overseen by a Trustee committee.

The future

Here is information on all projects carried out at the Community Centre to make it a better and safer place for everyone.

2023 is an exciting time for the Community Centre, using a grant from EHDC we upgraded the outdated heating system to a Air Heat Source pump. Installed by local plumber Lacey Heating. We also had solar panels installed. It is the aim of the Management Committee to get the centre to be a carbon zero building. The Mayor of Hertford, Vicky Smith, officially opened the system in December 2023.

Its been a busy time at the start of 2024. Our trees have had a well deserved and long overdue trim up curtesy of longacretreesurgery.co.uk who carried out this work Free of Charge as part of their work in the local community, which was a huge saving of between £1500-£2000. This now lets in much more light to the hall and allows for optimal sunshine getting to our solar panels. Nothing has gone to waste as all of the wood chippings have been spread across our gardens. The logs will be being utilised too (keep watching). All of the hedges around the site have had their spring trim too. Its always busy maintaining the site but hopefully visitors will see the vast improvements that have been carried out so far.

A new picket fence has been installed by our Head of Maintenance. This is to protect our new Heat Pump and to secure the area, with no unauthorised access. The gardens are slowly getting replanted with bulbs and flowers and a new tree has also been planted.

A new wooden table has been built in the garden for people to use in the summer months along with the benches and table. All surrounded with some of the wood chippings, from the tree trimming.
